A Quick Review of DMAIC
In case you need a refresher on DMAIC, the basis for all things Six Sigma:
D- Define: Substantiate the issue in a clear statement. In a second statement, state the goals.
M- Measure: Use Value Stream Mapping for more focused comprehension. Collect baseline data, and cultivate a data collection plan.
A- Analyze: Determine possible root causes; estimate impact of root causes.
I- Improve: Create possible resolutions; develop a future Value Stream Map based on your specific data researched.
C- Control: Create a new standard process procedure training plan. Carry out the resolution and ongoing process for collecting data; transition and observe new process.
DMAIC Will Work…If Used Correctly
The use of Six Sigma DMAIC tools is an important one; it is the one methodology that is so thorough that it is primarily used to fix serious problems.
1) If the issue is intricate, the solution might not be easily obtained. To get to the issue, you need to obtain data from different areas or departments, and look for patterns or similarities that provide clues as to the cause of the issues.
2) It should be used if the solutions could yield high consequences. A major portion of the DMAIC methodology is to constantly be developing, testing, and refining the processes before it is implemented on to the workplace or business. You don’t want to add insult to injury, so every single new process has to be worked out until there is no room for error.
The DMAIC methodology takes time, so it may be tempting to skip portions. Consequently, when dissatisfaction occurs, the entire DMAIC process is then blamed. The irony is the one portion needed the most is the one that was omitted.
As with anything in life, you will get back what you put in. So, take each step in the process seriously. Remember, the DMAIC methodology has worked for all that have implemented it with intention to fix their issues. When you look at the steps involved in the DMAIC methodology, how can it not?
