At some point in your life, you’ve experienced exceptional customer service. Whether it’s by phone or at the actual establishment, experiencing exceptional customer service is like visiting an old knowledgeable friend who has all the answers.
Ironically, the same companies that have this type of customer service also carry exceptional products. Their organization runs like a well oiled machine, so chances are very rare that one of their customer service representatives would have very much more to do than fix a small, unforeseen glitch. Of course, that customer service rep would find the glitch in record time and fix it.
Companies with this type of excellence are usually in the Fortune 500, and they seem to have found the magic formula. What is that magic formula? Wait for it…yes…it’s Six Sigma.
Six Sigma can be used for prevention or as a cure
A good analogy: think of your company like you would your own body. If you are a health enthusiast, you are into prevention, so regular physicals, diet and exercise to keep your body running at peak level are probably part of your routine.
But, if you are a “wait till there is a problem” type of person, then Six Sigma can also be a great cure. If your company’s profits are sluggish (indicating business is down), the company could be losing energy. So think of Six Sigma very much like a doctor running tests to find where the weakness is, and through proven methodology, fixes it.
What Six Sigma has done since its beginnings back in 1987 is to improve quality to as near perfect as possible, thus saving and increasing revenue for many Fortune 500 companies. In fact, from 1987-2007, it is estimated that Six Sigma has saved many successful Fortune 500 companies an estimated $427 billion.
You will find that many outstanding leaders have been trained in the Six Sigma methodology. In today’s business climate and the current state of the economy, Six Sigma could very well be the cure that everyone is looking for.
