The ability to take data, and to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it…that’s going to be an even more important skill in the next several decades. Not only at the professional level, but even at the educational level for elementary school kids, for high school kids, and for college kids. We really do have essentially free and ubiquitous data, so the complimentary scarce factor is the ability to understand that data and extract value from it.
Six Sigma Black Belts typically use a statistical program to perform calculations, but an understanding of the underlying statistics is still needed. A Black Belt must be capable of understanding which hypothesis test is appropriate for a given use, as well as the assumptions that must be met to correctly perform the hypothesis test. They must also understand the data they are looking at, and know how to evaluate the quality and validity of the data.
