Standard Work is a foundation of Lean. Yet, it’s a concept that’s not understood well and, even worse, is often ignored by most companies that profess to practice lean in their operations.
I created a video that demonstrates the importance of Standard Work. This game is called the Standard Pig Game, or sometimes the Standard Pork Game. It’s a simple game, but very helpful in teaching the concept of standard work. I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful.

I really enjoyed the simplicity of the learning program and think it will be great for students to get their attention.
Thank you, Pat. I hope so; cartoons are disarming and I hope this approach will aid in student learning. Thanks for taking the time to read. Please feel free to tell your friends and coworkers about the program.
Very Very good,
I hope you don’t mind to put it into german language to be able to give the instructions to a german group of trainees
In exchange I would like to offer you a drawing to make people understand that there is a big difference in chasing chickens and fixing the fence… If interested, let me know.
Willi
Willi,
Thanks for the offer. I’ll look into a German translation. Probably not for a while though. Thanks.
Pete
I guess I could offer the german translation, using your slides and referring to you as a source? Would that be okay for you?
Willi
Hi Willi,
would you be kind enough to share your drawing on the “difference of chasing chickens and fixing the fence”?
Thanks!
James
Would you be kind enough to share your drawing on the difference of chasing chickens and fixing the fence? Sounds awesome!
Is there any way I could download this video as an mp4 file? I’m trying to use it in a training powerpoint but I don’t always have access to the internet when I need to hold my classes.
If another offline version is available other than an mp4 that would also be okay.
Thank you so much.
Very simple but extremely effective. Goals are easier to achieve when you have certain idea on where you want to get to.
This is very simple yet very effective. Thank you very much.
A good demonstration of what a standard is. Thanks
Very practical and simplistic method of educating others to the importance and necessity of standard work.
-Thank you
Thanks Pete,
A very good and simple way of providing a clear appreciation and understanding of Standard Work. Do you have procedure on how to make one ? The video shows already that there is one. I would like to know how to make one.
Thanks again and more power.
Best regards,
arvin
Thanks for the video. Where I work we’ve had many debates about the value of standard work, given that we are a firm specializing in custom facility design for our clients. My fear about using something like this is that I suspect they would view the ‘creativity’ of the first round of pigs as the highest ‘value’ vs. the standardized pig. (i.e. “We don’t do cookie cutter work.”) Has this ever come up in any of your training sessions and how to do overcome this objection to standard work?
Love the video. Simple and effective.
Lean thru simple pig……wonderfully explained KIS Keep It Simple!
K.I.S.S. Principle. Perfect.
I enjoyed the simplicity.
Amazing approach, Very simple, cheap and fast to use !!!
I Really Enjoy it!
Standardization is one of the most important factors to eliminate variations.
The objectives of the team work are to deliver the results of the projects assigned
as faster, as accurate as possible so for a team leader,
it is very important to eliminate our own variations by standardizing our own instrucations
for team members to execute.
Pig game is veryuseful for team leaders to learn how to provide the instructions precisely.
It is a great exercise, I liked it
Thank you for this! Using it with my class this week!
