Six Sigma Leadership Profile: Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most well-known and successful technology entrepreneurs since Steve Jobs. He founded Facebook in 2004 and, as of May 2017, is Forbes’ fifth richest person in the world. Facebook is a worldwide phenomenon, a household name. It’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t use it, let alone someone without a user account. Zuckerberg launched the social networking site while still at Harvard in his college dorm room. While we all know how Facebook began, not everyone knows how it’s currently run. Learn how Mark Zuckerberg uses Six Sigma to operate one of the most successful corporations in history.

Big Data Leads to Big Success

Thanks to Zuckerberg’s ingenuity, his company is a world-renowned corporation with over a billion users globally. He has striven to make it a major pillar of the technology sector, rivaling both Google and Apple. Furthermore, his creation is one of the most prominent companies around using Big Data at the moment, and have been for years. Like Google, Facebook processes vast amounts of extremely detailed customer information in various ways. As Facebook increases its user numbers, they continue to harvest larger amounts of data.

How Does Facebook Use Its Data?

Under Zuckerberg, Facebook devotes much of its time to collecting, storing, and analyzing user data to predict user behavior. Does this sound familiar? That’s right. This type of data analysis is extremely similar to how Six Sigma and Lean both work. Both rely on data to take control of the value stream and predict future customer demands. The social media site has adapted the Six Sigma process for their own needs, using it to determine potential future user actions. They do this in several ways:

  • Tracking Cookies.

Almost all websites on the internet use cookies in order to track your web searches. While logged in, for example, Facebook can track the sites you visit while using their own. This is why they always seem to know what products you have in your Amazon cart.

  • Facial Recognition and Tag Suggestion.

This may sound very high-tech, but facial recognition software is a reality. It is currently in wide use by media and technology companies, the police, the government, and more. Facebook uses its facial recognition and image processing software to track users across the Internet, particularly via other Facebook profiles. They can do this due to the image data the site retains when you share photos. Similarly, they also use this data to create tag suggestions that allow you to keep track of who’s in your photos.

  • Analyzing Your Likes.

Research shows that Facebook can predict a startling array of personal attributes by analyzing your likes. In fact, they can determine everything from your occupation, relationship status, intelligence, religion, age, ethnicity, and more. This may sound sinister, but they are only interested in using this data to improve user Like Amazon, Facebook has changed dramatically since its inception. We can expect it to continue to use Big Data, streamlining processes to better tailor itself to user needs.
