Many great lessons are right under our nose. In an attempt to teach our future generations, we fail to review these lessons for ourselves. Let us take the ant farm as an example, and the sheer genius of seeing these little creatures in action.
Ants Seem to Understand Basic Six Sigma Concepts
From the moment you receive Uncle Milton’s Ant Farm®, the ants quickly, almost telepathically, communicate what they have to do. From a productivity standpoint, let’s go over how close the ants are to following the Six Sigma methodology.
- Communication: Ants do communicate much differently than humans. They use pheromones, which are used as chemical signals. They have instant two-way communication to solve whatever issues come up.
- Teamwork: Ants work as a disciplined team ensemble. They know what their role is within the team. They are the ultimate team players.
- Develop an efficient routine or processes: Ants know the most efficient way of doing their daily tasks of obtaining food. They don’t deviate from their routine, because their process is tried and true.
- Set Deadlines: Ants know what they have to get done and their timeframe, so there isn’t time for being lazy, and then trying to speed ahead by multi-tasking.
- Have a Positive Attitude: Ants are very tiny and still accomplish great feats, because of their “can do” attitude. They know their survival is dependent on each other, so everything they do for the colony is for the greater good of each other, and future generations of ants.
Ants truly have the perfect social organization. Each type of individual ant has a specific job within that colony, and they do what they do best, enhancing productivity for the organization as a whole. It is the epitome of what the Six Sigma methodology is all about.
