On July 30^th 2016, in our blog entitled “Origami As A Lean Six Sigma Learning Tool” we brought to light how a Certified Six Sigma instructor from India taught the whole concept of Six Sigma to 36 students who were 14-15 years old.  The genius of that he himself was also using the core of Six Sigma, which is VOC, the voice of the customer, what the customer needs or requires. The school system wanted those kids to understand Six Sigma and the instructor delivered.

On August 14 2016, in our blog entitled “Lean Six Sigma Tools for Your Email Inbox” we talked about how versatile these tools are, through the example of a hammer.  You can use a hammer to pound in a nail, or you can use the hammer with a chisel to remove a tile. The basic function of that hammer doesn’t change, but how you use to apply its use is up to you.

On November 27, 2016, we tackled emergency preparedness in our blog entitled “Six Sigma the Perfect Template for Emergency Preparedness.” Here we discussed dealing with a situation that has not yet happened, so the doctrines in Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) would be used. As many of you remember, this is used for a new product or service that hasn’t been established yet.

In our blog dated December 10^th 2016, “Is the Spirit of Six Sigma Encrypted Inside Amazon?” we discussed the online retail giant Amazon. Like it or not, Amazon is here to stay, and they constantly are improving using VOC as their staple. The software that was created and is continuously updated is all done to satisfy the customer’s needs and requirements.

These are but a few of our blogs that is dedicated to finding the Six Sigma in our every day lives, thus making Six Sigma both timeless and genius.

Have you planned out what you and your family would do in case of a high level earthquake? Fire? What about if the worst happens, do you have all your affairs in order?

These situations are hard to think about but necessary to prepare for, just in case. The preparation is a perfect example of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). You’re dealing with a situation that hopefully hasn’t happened, and we pray never will.

Creating an evacuation plan is very much akin to developing processes at work. In fact the DMADV methodology is perfect for creating an emergency evacuation plan. It stands for Define-Measure-Analyze-Design-Verify. Remember you are not fixing a problem per say, you are creating a solution to a possible but very real situation.

It is the perfect template and should be utilized for all emergency preparedness. This would include having crates handy where they are easy to get to, instead of having them in the garage.

The action of being prepared in case of an emergency also includes having extra supplies such as food, water, medications, blankets, and anything that is important that you cannot be without.

If you are planning an escape route out of your house, a diagram or blueprint of your dwelling will make the planning easier to visualize. Once it is created, then you must do enough trail runs that it becomes second nature.

When you have fire drills, make sure you and your family are taking them seriously. This is a matter of life and death, without that intention you are wasting your time.

Obviously you won’t know where the fire is situated, but have several possible escape routes that would work and please practice them.

If there is an earthquake of great magnitude, safety is number one. Number two would be uniting with your loved ones. If your family lives near by, it makes it easier, but if you have to go clear across town and the main freeway impossible to drive, having bikes becomes an excellent option! If you don’t know how to ride a bike, make learning to ride one a priority.
