Great post. You are so right that the CEO sets the tone of the entire company culture. I experienced it in large corporations – like Jack Welch and GE – as well as small businesses.

The biggest impact for Lean or other change/improvement practitioners, is to recognize that if the CEO doesn’t buy-in then any initiative doesn’t stand a good chance of surviving long-term. People can easily see through lip-service and also can recognize true support and passion – just like Matt Rutledge’s email. Some CEOs would do well to be more cognizant of this fact.
