I had an opportunity to meet him during a briefing of our general defensive plan.

He was far more impressive in person than he is on television. At one point during the briefing, he turned and asked his staff a simple question. But in order to ask that question he had mentally compared the arrows and symbols on our little map with every related overlay in the NATO defense plan, and had flagged another plan which conflicted with ours.

His simple question, in a soft voice, said volumes. At one level it was “Hey – you guys should have checked that.” But he said it in a way that was teaching, not reprimanding. I could tell that his staff knew immediately that they should have checked that, and further, that they were going to cross check everything else as soon as they got back to Frankfurt. Not because the general said so, but because it was their job to keep the boss focused on the big picture by handling the details in the background.

These leadership principles are extremely valuable and I particularly appreciate the ones about being true to your own instincts and values (3,4,10,11,15).
