Thanks for the clarification.

Bill Marriott in his post explains how he values people, listens to them, and communicates with them. I hope he is taking the same approach as he walks the Marriott Gemba. I also hope that he gets involved and occasionally gets his hands dirty by doing work alongside the Marriott employees.

One point: “Management By Walking Around” (MBWA) isn’t the same as the Toyota Gemba or Genchi Genbutsu (go see) concepts. I believe MBWA was mad popular by HP.

MBWA, at its worst, is a manager just walking around and shaking hands or checking in on people (think Lumbergh from Office Space).

In true Toyota style, you have to go out and listen to people, observe, really get interested in what problems people are facing. So, I hope Bill is doing more than just being out there. Even as CEO, if he’s going to be out there, he has to get involved.
