4. If you are the “best practice” benchmark, you are less likely to try to improve. There is no burning platform if you are trying to hit an industry benchmark instead of striving to improve your own best results. Continuous improvement means no settling!

I take a benchmark to set a baseline before I start experimenting to see if my hypothesis is true. I’m less concerned about what others are doing relative to the benchmark, but where I’m at. It helps to answer the question, “If I do X what do I hope the net effect of my efforts will be?” And later, “Now that I’ve done X, how has that affected performance/quality/revenue?”
